I can confirm that on first reading, I was "hearing" Al's internal dialogue and his "fuuuuuck. I have to completely betray Father and my charges, because I stabbed the kid here and he'll die from it if I don't."

In reply to <a href="https://ea.asmodrawscomics.com/comic/part-2-pg-156/#comment-3036">Hasume Okaasan</a>.

Exactly - there's no going back from stabbing someone who thought you meant them no harm! Al knew it was gonna suck, but he never thought Merchant was gonna be such a dillweed and refuse standard payment. I didn't write an internal dialogue for Al's silence as he considers his options, but I hoped the resignation on his face in that last panel kinda summed it up, haha. Between a rock and a hard place is nowhere to be :<

Question: If Al had chosen not to accept the Merchant's unusual request, would the blade currently lodged in Ethan's intestines been removed (without wounding him) because the Merchant contract was null and void? Or was Al given the very real choice of 1. Partial disembowelment of Ethan OR 2. Sacrifice soldiers that you value and wish to protect.
The knife wound might've been survivable even on top of the pint of blood lost and shock Ethan already experienced, if the wound was given very prompt medical attention, but with the risks of infection and blood loss, this could be a death sentence for Ethan that Al just gave him. Meaning, Al had no choice the minute he carved those runes on his hand. Once he stabbed Ethan he would HAVE to agree to whatever terms the Merchant demanded because to cancel the contract would make the "offering" stab wound worthless to the Merchant. Which put poor Al in a horrible position. Jeez. Asmo, that's not nice. :C
