I think Adam’s jealous. I think he’s cranky because Ethan got a bigger, hotter demon than he did.
And I think there’s probably some kind of a thing about how your demon says something about who you are inside.
Because to manifest a weapon you have to be at least 50 percent synchronized — which I think means magically that demon and exorcist have strong common traits — with who and what you are inside.
Adam’s got the cutest, shyest, most adorable demon. Adam has a problem because he’s something of a submissive, and has in the past been treated like a toy because he was at some point cute and shy. And he was bullied for it, probably by a parent or mentor figure. And we later learn that he’s the most SENSITIVE to auras of his teammates.

And Iblin reminds him of that, and he resents that it’s being shown to everyone. On top of him being an overcompensating jerk to the universe and a bigot against demons.

I wouldn’t have chosen him for the job, but my perspective is different to that of the Exorcism Academy: they want to train people to get rid of demons, not to deal with them in a positive police sort of way.
